The Classic American Hamburger
Ingredients
- 1.5 lbs ground beef (80/20 blend recommended)
- Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
- 4 hamburger buns
- Optional Toppings: Cheese slices (cheddar, American), lettuce leaves, tomato slices, onion slices (raw or grilled), pickles, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp vegetable oil or butter (for cooking, optional)
Instructions
- Divide & Shape: Gently divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions (6 oz each). Form each portion into a patty about 3/4-inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty with your thumb (prevents puffing up).
- Season: Season both sides of the patties generously with salt and pepper just before cooking.
- Cook:
- Grilling: Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Grill patties for 4-5 minutes per side for medium-rare, 5-6 minutes for medium, or longer depending on desired doneness. Add cheese during the last minute of cooking if desired.
- Pan-Frying: Heat oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Place patties in the hot skillet. Cook for 4-6 minutes per side for medium, adjusting time for desired doneness. Add cheese during the last minute.
- Toast Buns: Lightly toast the hamburger buns on the grill or in the skillet during the last minute of cooking.
- Assemble: Place cooked patties on the bottom buns. Add desired toppings (cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles) and condiments. Place the top bun on.
- Serve: Serve immediately.
